Hello! The 20th day of our sample we did not observe significant changes. The odor became more noticeable due to the presence of hydrogen sulphide (H
2
S). The lower part of the sediment became darker because of the precence of organic matter in the
Winogradsky column. The color of the upper layer in the sample is lighter than the previous days.




More information will be posted when other changes occur!

Volos_Group 12_Day 10_Dark

hello, we are two undergraduate students,Lazaridou Polixeni and Vaggelis Kydonakis,from Department of Ichthyology and Aquatic Environment,Volos. We are doing an experiment with the Winogradsky column. In the column we used a plastic bottle 1.5 lit, seawater 500 ml, an egg, an amount of sediment from the beach of Anavros (a region of Volos) and pieces of newspaper. During the first day the column was placed in a dark place, at room conditions. 
 10th day: The water became darker. This is due  the presence of FeS which is produced by anaerobic microorganisms present in the column. In the sediment we can see blackish colour because of the production of H2S from anaerobic reactions.

 We are undergraduate students Department of Ichthyology and Aquatic Environment, University of Thessaly, Volos, Greece.We are the 14 th group.

The ingredients we used in  Winogradsky column were: 1 whole egg(source of CaCOand S), pieces of paper(source of C). These ingredients were mixed with sand that was taken from Anauros beach in Volos(21st  March 2016).We filled the bottle with 2/3 sand and  the rest with water from the sea. The bottle was placed in the dark .



Today ,10 days after we observed a small change in the column .The precipitate seems to took darker colour .Also we noticed a small odor .

  Our names are Vasiliki Papadimitriou and Nikos Danavaras and we are undergraduate students from Department of Ichthyology and Aquatic Environment, University of Thessaly, Volos, Greece. We are presenting our results from Winogradsky column experiment that was conducted in 21/03/2016 at Anauros beach (Volos).

INGREDIENTS
  • 1 egg
  • pieces of newspaper
  • 1 plastic bottle (1,5lt)
  • mud from the beach
  • sea water
  2/3 of our bottle contain mud mixed with one egg and some newspaper pieces and the rest of the bottle is filled with sea water.

  In the first day of our experiment the water is clear and has a yellow colour.

  In the third day the water is less clear and has a light yellow colour. The water level is higher compared with the water level in the first day and in the surface of our bottle there are some bubbles.

  In the fourth day the water is quite turbid and its colour is more white. The water level is higher and has reached the surface.

  In the seventh day the colour of the water is more white but in the space between the water and the mud, it has created a thick white line. The water level is lower compared with the previous days and our sediment has black colour.

  Today (10th day) we can see that the water is still turbid and its colour is darker. We can also see the thick white line that was created three days ago. The water level is higher compared with the water level in the seventh day and the colour of the sediment is darker now. Finally in our bottle it has created a thick surface layer.

Volos_Group 31_Day 9_Light

University of Thessaly, Group number:31  , Day number: 9  Incubation: Light

Our names are Panagiotis Papastathopoulos and Vlachakis Sotirios and we are undergraduate students Department of Ichthyology and Aquatic Environment, University of Thessaly, Volos, Greece.
This experiment conducted in order to observe the presence of microorganisms in our Winogradsky columns.The ingredients we used in each column were: 1 whole egg(source of CaCOand S), pieces of paper(source of C). These ingredients were mixed with sand that was taken from Anauros beach in Volos(21th March 2016).We filled the bottle with 2/3 sand and  the rest with water from the sea. The bottle was put in conditions with light intensity and temperatures of 15-20°C. 
Today ,9 days after the column was made some change.The mud seems to took darker colour, the water took yellow-beige and we can observe a white line between the sand and water.

Volos_Group 9_Day 1-9_Light

Our names are Ilianna Kaltsatou and Ioanna Kalogiri and we are undergraduate students Department of Ichthyology and Aquatic Environment, University of Thessaly, Volos, Greece.

From the first day of the experiment, it is observed that water is not turbid and it has a light yellow colour. After 3 days, the water is quite turbid with bubbles to the surface and in the space between the sand and the water created a white line. Today the water level went up considerably and has more bubbles and the sand took a dark / black colour.

Our names are Dimitriou Konstantina and Dalosi Kleopatra and we are undergraduate students Deparment of Ichthyology and Aquatic Environment, UTH University of Volos.
I'm presenting my results from the Winogradsky column experiment that was conducted in 21/03/2016 at Anauros beach (Volos).
We made one column from a 1.5 L plastic bottle which by 2/3 contains mud from the seaside mixed with enrichment materials (1 chicken egg with its shell and some newspaper pieces). After the column was filled to the mouth of the bottle, the mud precipitated and a zone of water was created occupying 25% of the column. The bottle was put in conditions with light intensity and temperatures of 15-20°C.
Today,7 days after the column was made some change.The mud seems to took darker colour and the water took yellow-beige.

Winogradsky column (Team 16) Betsiou-Biltsari

Our names are Betsiou Maria-Soultana and Biltsari Joulieta and we are undergraduate students of Ichthyology, UTH university of Volos.
I'm presenting our first results from the Winogradsky column experiment that was conducted in 21/03/2016 at Anauros beach (Volos).
We made one column from a 1.5 L plastic bottle which by 2/3 contains mud from the seaside mixed with enrichment materials (1 chicken egg with its shell and some newspaper pieces). After the column was filled to the mouth of the bottle, the mud precipitated and a zone of water was created occupying 25% of the column. The bottle was put in conditions of no light intensity and temperatures of 15-20°C.
Today, 5 days after the column was made not much seems to have changed. The mud seems to still be the same and the water took a light yellow shade. I will make a new post when something changes!

Winogradsky column, Department of Biological Applications & Technology, Ioannina



Hello everybody,
My name is George Sartzis and I'm an undergraduate student of Biology from the Department of Biological Applications and Technology of the University of Ioannina.
I'm presenting my results from the Winogradsky column experiment that was conducted in 23/10/2015 at Voidomatis River.
I made one column from a 1.5 L plastic bottle which by 1/3 contains mud from the riverside mixed with enrichment materials (1 chicken egg with its shell, 5g of baking powder and some newspaper pieces) and by 2/3 pure riverside mud. After the column was filled to the mouth of the bottle, the mud precipitated and a zone of water was created occupying 25% of the column.
The bottle was put in conditions of medium (to low) light intensity and temperatures of 10 to 15°C.
Today, 3 and a half months after the column was made, outwardly, not much seem to have changed. The mud is a little bit darker and the water became more blurred than the first day.
Although there were (and still are) too few visual indications that "something was going on in there", 2 1/2 months after the creation of the column, the cap of the bottle cracked due to the high pressure of the inside of the bottle. A small quantity of water was spilled out and a strong rotten egg smell arose. 2 days after that incident the spilled water had evaporated leaving behind a red smudge on the floor.
I suppose that sulfur-reducing cells have grown in the mud and they produce H2S. That's why the pressure of the bottle was high before the bottle cap cracked. H2S production also explains the rotten egg smell. As for the red smudge from the spilled water I believe that microorganisms that existed in the water found the conditions outside of the bottle more suitable to increase in numbers and predominate against other species which were dominant in the inside of the bottle.
Furthermore, I think that probably the conditions of the room where the bottle was put were not suitable for most of the cells in the sample to grow and/or the riverside mud's microbial load was quiet low. That's why there are, until now, too few changes in the visual appearance of the column.
Unfortunately I currently have no photos of my Winogradsky column to post. I will upload some photos as soon as possible.
